About
Arthur Preston Aylesworth (August 12, 1883 – June 26, 1946) was an American actor who worked in both stage and film. Born in Apponaug, Rhode Island, he came from a military family; both his father and grandfather were graduates of the United States Military Academy, and Aylesworth himself attended the academy for two years before pursuing a career in performance.
His Broadway career spanned more than three decades, beginning with his debut in Over Night in 1911 and concluding with the comedy Yankee Point in 1942. Among the productions he appeared in during that period were the musical Follow Thru (1929), the play Unexpected Husband, the musical Go Easy, Mabel, and the play Amourette. In total, his stage work extended across more than a quarter of a century.
From the early 1930s onward, Aylesworth transitioned substantially into film, becoming a contract player at Warner Brothers where he worked primarily as a character actor, frequently in uncredited roles. Over the course of his screen career he appeared in more than 130 films. He is buried at Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles.
