About

Aroldo Lindi, born Gustav Harald Lindau on 26 May 1888 in Tuna, Sweden, was a Swedish operatic tenor whose career spanned international opera houses and culminated in a Broadway appearance in 1932. He died on 8 March 1944.

Lindi built a substantial international career as a tenor, performing at two of the world's most prestigious opera venues: La Scala and Covent Garden, where he appeared from 1925. In the United States, his operatic engagements included performances with the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company, the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company, and the Chicago Civic Opera.

His Broadway credit came in 1932, when he participated in the Radio City Music Hall Inaugural Program, placing him among the performers who marked the opening of that landmark New York venue.

Lindi's death occurred onstage at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. According to Robert Rushmore's book The Singing Voice, he collapsed and died after completing the aria "Vesti la giubba" from Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. His friend Coe Glade was present at the time of his death and later described the event in an interview given to the Vocal Record Collectors' Society in Chicago, as documented by the blog Forgotten Opera Singers. His life and career are also referenced in Allan Kastrup's The Swedish Heritage in America, published by the Swedish Council of America in 1975, and in Richard Lindau's work Aroldo Lindi, the Singing Pugilist.
