About
Arnold Lucy, born Walter George Campbell on 8 August 1865 in Tottenham, London, was a British theatre and film actor whose career spanned several decades on both stage and screen. He was the youngest of six sons born to Donald Campbell, an architect and surveyor, and his wife Lucy Elizabeth, née Speak, of Church Lane, Hornfield Lodge, Tottenham. His parents had married in 1853, and the family's youngest child overall was a daughter, Rose Lucy, born in 1871.
Before pursuing a career in performance, Lucy spent five years working for an accounting firm in London. In 1887 he traveled to Australia, where he built an early reputation reciting prose monologues and both humorous and dramatic poetry. Returning to England, he studied under Hermann Vezin and continued to perform recitations at various venues. His formal acting career began in 1895 when he joined the cast of The Passport at Terry's Theatre as an understudy. By his own account, he appeared on the London West End stage more than 1,200 times before transitioning to film.
Lucy made his film debut in the silent picture The Devil's Toy in 1916 and went on to appear in more than 40 British and American productions between 1916 and 1938. He frequently took on authoritarian and dignified characters, with his most recognized screen role being Professor Kantorek in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), a nationalistic schoolteacher who urges his students to enlist in a devastating war.
Alongside his film work, Lucy maintained an active stage presence in the United States, appearing in 15 Broadway productions between 1912 and 1927. His credits included The Light of the World, American Born, Roads of Destiny, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Androcles and the Lion, among other productions.
Lucy died on 15 December 1945 in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 80.
