Armand Cortes

Armand Cortes, also credited as Armand Cortez, was born on August 16, 1880, in Nîmes, France, and went on to build a career as an actor in American theater and film spanning several decades. He died on November 19, 1948, in San Francisco.

Cortes established himself on Broadway across a period stretching from 1901 to 1935, accumulating credits in both musical and dramatic productions. His stage work included the musical The Rollicking Girl, the musical The Messenger Boy, and the plays A Farewell to Arms, The Plutocrat, and Mima. His casting in The Messenger Boy dates specifically to 1902, placing him among the working Broadway performers of the early twentieth century.

Alongside his stage career, Cortes appeared in a substantial number of films beginning in the silent era. His screen credits include The House of Bondage in 1914, How Molly Made Good in 1915, and Seven Keys to Baldpate in 1917. In 1916 he appeared in Yellow Menace in the role of Hong Kong Harry. He took on villain roles in at least two productions: Dodging a Million in 1918 and The Revenge of Tarzan in 1920. His film work continued into the sound era, with appearances in What an Idea in 1932 and Bluebeard's Eighth Wife in 1938.

Cortes remained active in theater into the 1940s, appearing in the musical revue Star Time at the Majestic Theater in 1944.
