About
Armand Anthony Assante Jr. was born on October 4, 1949, in New York City and raised in Cornwall, New York. His father, Armand Anthony Assante Sr., worked as a painter and artist, while his mother, Katharine, née Healy, was a music teacher, English teacher, and poet. Assante is of Italian and Irish descent.
Assante established himself on the New York stage before transitioning to screen work, appearing on Broadway between 1975 and 1981. He starred in Kingdoms and also took roles in Romeo + Juliet, Comedians, and Boccaccio during that period. His early television work in the 1970s included regular roles on two NBC soap operas: How to Survive a Marriage, in which he played Johnny McGhee, and The Doctors, where he portrayed Mike Powers.
His film career began with The Lords of Flatbush in 1974, though his work was cut from the final version and his name was misspelled in the end credits. His first on-screen appearance was playing Sylvester Stallone's brother in Paradise Alley. He starred in Prophecy in 1979, and the following year appeared in Private Benjamin as a French love interest opposite Goldie Hawn's character. In 1982, he took on the title role of Mickey Spillane's private detective in I, the Jury, and in 1984 portrayed violin virtuoso Maximillian Stein in the Dudley Moore comedy Unfaithfully Yours.
Assante portrayed Napoleon Bonaparte in the 1987 television production Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story opposite Jacqueline Bisset, and played Sanchez, Queen Isabella's Minister of State, in 1492: Conquest of Paradise. His role as Roberto Texador in Sidney Lumet's 1990 film Q&A earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He went on to portray Bugsy Siegel in Neil Simon's The Marrying Man in 1991 and mafia boss Carol D'Allesandro in Hoffa in 1992. He appeared opposite Antonio Banderas as a Cuban bandleader in The Mambo Kings and alongside Sylvester Stallone in the science-fiction adaptation Judge Dredd.
His performance as crime boss John Gotti in the 1996 HBO television film Gotti brought him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. He went on to play Odysseus in the 1997 miniseries adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey and later portrayed philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in the film adaptation of Irving Yalom's novel When Nietzsche Wept. In the 2007 film American Gangster, alongside Denzel Washington, Josh Brolin, and Russell Crowe, Assante played Dominic Cattano, a character based on real-life Lucchese family boss Carmine Tramunti; the film received two Oscar nominations at the 80th Academy Awards in 2008. He also appeared in a recurring guest role on NCIS as international arms dealer René Benoit, and had roles in the 2009 horror film Smile and the Lifetime film Sugar. Throughout his career, Assante has received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations, four Golden Globe Award nominations, and two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.
Outside his acting work, Assante has participated in film projects and humanitarian endeavors across Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. In 2010, he received a star on the Italian Walk of Fame in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 2013, he became a partner in a premium cigar brand called Ora Vivo Cigars. On a personal level, Assante had a relationship with actress Dyan Cannon, his co-star from the 1978 production Lady of the House, and married Karen McArn in 1982. The couple had two daughters before separating in 1992. He has also been linked to Italian actress Mara Venier and Vanessa Constantino.
