About
Antonio Mairena, born Antonio Cruz García on September 7, 1909, in Mairena del Alcor, Seville Province, Spain, was a Spanish flamenco musician dedicated to preserving and promoting what he regarded as pure or authentic flamenco. He died in Seville on September 5, 1983, at the age of 73.
Central to Mairena's artistic mission was the recovery of flamenco songs that had fallen into near obscurity. He rescued and recreated a substantial number of these forms, working to ensure their survival within the broader tradition. Alongside his performance career, he authored books and articles articulating his perspectives on flamenco and its history. He viewed himself as an heir to the art of Manuel Torre, whom he considered the most classical flamenco singer from Jerez, and he also recognized the formative influence of masters such as Tomás Pavón and Joaquín el de la Paula.
Among the honors Mairena received, the most significant was the Llave de Oro del Cante, or Gold Key of Flamenco Singing, awarded at the third Concurso de Córdoba. Some flamenco historians have noted a belief that the contest was organized specifically to present him with this distinction, though others have argued the recognition was warranted by his contributions to the art form.
His recording career spanned several decades, beginning with releases in 1941 including Fiesta por bulerías y fandangos and Bulerías y fandangos. Subsequent recordings included Disco de Tánger in 1944, multiple releases in 1950, and Con Antonio y Carmen Rojas al baile in 1952. His Disco de Londres appeared in 1954, followed by Cantes de Antonio Mairena in 1958 and Sevilla cuna del cante flamenco in 1959. Among his most notable later works were Antología del cante flamenco y cante gitano dirigida por Antonio Mairena in 1960, La gran historia del cante gitano-andaluz, a three-LP set released in 1966, and Mis recuerdos de Manuel Torre in 1970. His final recording, El calor de mis recuerdos, was released in 1983.
Mairena also appeared on Broadway in 1955, performing in the production Antonio.
