About

J. Anthony Crane, also known as Tony Crane, is an American actor working across film, television, and stage. Born on October 19, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, Crane earned a degree in Theatre and Writing from Northwestern University in 1993, having previously obtained a certificate from the Royal National Theatre of London in 1992.

Crane made his Broadway debut in Sight Unseen, the play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies, where he understudied Ben Shenkman. His Broadway career, which spans from 2002 to 2022, also includes productions of A House in the Country, The Winslow Boy, Butley, and Between Riverside and Crazy, in which he appeared as Lieutenant Dave Caro in Stephen Adly Giurgis' play at Second Stage.

Beyond Broadway, Crane has accumulated a range of stage credits. He performed as Lancelot in the official Las Vegas production of the Monty Python musical Spamalot, directed by Mike Nichols, and took on the role of Scar in Disney's musical production of The Lion King in 2010. In 2017, he joined the North American tour of Les Misérables, playing M. Thenardier. His stage work has earned him nominations for the Helen Hayes, Bay Area, and Berkshires Area Acting awards, as well as numerous Broadway World Awards.

On television, Crane is recognized for portraying Remy McSwain in The Big Easy, a series adapted from the 1987 film. His other television appearances include Chicago PD, CSI, Succession, Billions, FBI, Dead Ringers alongside Rachel Weisz, and the fourth and fifth seasons of Netflix's Outer Banks, in which he plays Chandler Groff. His film work dates to 1989, when he appeared in The War of the Roses, with subsequent credits including Wishmaster, Turning, and Plucked.

Crane is the son of Los Angeles physician Paul H. Crane. In addition to his acting career, he has worked for many years as a cook in the restaurant industry in Chicago and is an accomplished visual artist and woodworker. He has spent considerable time as a resident of New Orleans, where he is a founding member of the Bywater Wonderland Society. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.
