About
Annie Esmond (27 September 1873 – 4 January 1945) was a British stage and film actress born in Surrey, England. Her performing career spanned more than five decades and encompassed pantomime, stage work on both sides of the Atlantic, silent films, and sound pictures.
Esmond began her career on the stage, making her debut in pantomime in Sheffield in 1891. She subsequently built a presence on both the British and American stage over many years. Her Broadway career extended from 1905 to 1929, during which she appeared in a range of musical and dramatic productions. Among her Broadway credits were the musical The Hoyden and the plays The Middle Watch, Miss Information, and Trilby.
Following her stage career, Esmond transitioned into film, working in both silent pictures and later talkies. She established herself as a prolific supporting actress in films, frequently cast in roles such as servants and nannies. Her film work continued into the 1940s, with appearances including the 1943 production Dear Octopus.
