About

Annette Carol Bening was born on May 29, 1958, in Topeka, Kansas, to Shirley Katherine Bening, a church singer and soloist, and Arnett Grant Bening, a sales training consultant and insurance salesman. The youngest of four children, she has an older sister, Jane, and two older brothers, Bradley and Byron. The family relocated to Wichita, Kansas, in 1959, and later to San Diego, California, where Bening completed her youth and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1975 after studying drama there. Before pursuing higher education, she spent a year working as a cook on a charter boat and scuba diving recreationally. She attended San Diego Mesa College before earning a degree in Theatre Arts from San Francisco State University. She also trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco through its Advanced Theatre Training Program.

Bening began her professional stage career with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival company in 1980 and also performed at the San Diego Repertory Theatre. At the American Conservatory Theater, she played Lady Macbeth in a production of Macbeth, and during the 1985–86 season she appeared in productions of Pygmalion and The Cherry Orchard at the Denver Center Theatre Company. She made her Broadway debut in 1987 in Tina Howe's Coastal Disturbances, playing the young photographer Holly Dancer. The performance earned her a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Bening made her film debut in The Great Outdoors in 1988, followed by Valmont in 1989, in which she played the Marquise de Merteuil opposite Colin Firth. Her breakthrough came with The Grifters in 1990, where she portrayed con artist Myra Langtry, earning her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In 1991, she appeared alongside Warren Beatty in Barry Levinson's Bugsy, playing Virginia Hill, a role that brought her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. She co-starred with Harrison Ford in Regarding Henry the same year, and reunited with Beatty in Love Affair in 1994. In 1995, she played an environmental lobbyist opposite Michael Douglas in The American President, and subsequently appeared in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! in 1996 and The Siege in 1998.

Her performance as Carolyn Burnham in Sam Mendes' American Beauty in 1999 brought Bening widespread critical recognition. The dark comedy-drama, which won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, and nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. That same year, she returned to the stage for the first time in a decade, playing the title role in Hedda Gabler at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

In the following years, Bening continued to accumulate significant screen credits. She played the title character in the comedy-drama Being Julia in 2004, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and receiving her second Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Her portrayal of Jean Harris in the HBO film Mrs. Harris in 2005 earned her nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film. She starred in the film adaptation of Running with Scissors in 2006 and appeared in The Women in 2008.

Bening received her fourth Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role as a lesbian mother in The Kids Are All Right in 2010, a performance that also won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. Her subsequent film work included 20th Century Women in 2016, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool in 2017, Captain Marvel in 2019, and Death on the Nile in 2022. She appeared in the miniseries Apples Never Fall in 2024.

Bening returned to Broadway in 2019 in a revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons, in which she starred and for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play. Her Broadway career, which spans from 1987 to 2019, encompasses both Coastal Disturbances and All My Sons. Across her career, her accolades include a BAFTA Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, nominations for five Academy Awards, two Tony Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award.
