About

Annette Margaret Bade (March 22, 1900 – September 2, 1975) was an American stage performer who appeared on Broadway between 1916 and 1924 and was known as a Ziegfeld girl. She was born in New York City to William Bade and Lillian C. Bade, née Dittman. Both her parents and grandparents worked in show business. Bade left school after the eighth grade and worked as a milliner's model before beginning her stage career.

Her Broadway career spanned nearly a decade and encompassed musicals, plays, and revues. She made her Broadway debut in The Century Girl during the 1916–1917 season, followed by Words and Music in 1917–1918. She appeared in Aphrodite in 1919 and Morris Gest's Midnight Whirl in the 1919–1920 season. Bade subsequently performed in several Ziegfeld productions, including the Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic in 1921, the Ziegfeld 9 O'Clock Frolic in 1921, and the Ziegfeld Frolic in 1922. Her later Broadway credits included the play Cold Feet in 1923 and the revue Vogues of 1924. In addition to her stage work, she appeared in one silent film, A Woman's Business, in 1920.

Beyond performing, Bade worked as a fashion model and was among the actress clients of British designer Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon. Her physical presence attracted notice from critics; George Jean Nathan quipped, "I venerate Molière, and Annette Bade's legs," while another critic described her as "slim, fair, youthful, and possessing a voice somewhere between a whine and a whisper."

Bade married advertising executive Alfred Clarence Mace Jr., who died in 1934. The couple had a daughter, Anne Catherine Mace (1925–1980), who stood over six feet tall despite her mother being consistently described as petite, and who also became a showgirl. On May 6, 1944, Bade applied for a marriage license with Irving Rose in Manhattan. In the 1940 census she listed her occupation as saleslady. She died on September 2, 1975, in Florida.
