About
Anne Rogers is a retired British actress, singer, and dancer born on 29 July 1933 in Liverpool, England, to Patrick and Ellen Rogers. The family lived at 2 Atkinson Street L3, a property since demolished, situated near St Anne Street. At the outbreak of World War II, Rogers was evacuated to Winsford, Cheshire.
Rogers began her professional stage career in 1954 with a minor role in the original West End production of Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend. When the leading lady fell ill with only a day before opening night, the director asked whether anyone in the cast could sing a top C. Rogers raised her hand, and she went on to open the show the following evening in the lead role of Polly Browne, a part she would hold for nearly four years. Prior London commitments prevented her from reprising the role in the Broadway transfer of The Boy Friend, an absence that opened the door for Julie Andrews to take the part. Rogers subsequently traveled to the United States to play Eliza Doolittle in the Hollywood and Chicago productions of My Fair Lady, earning the Sarah Siddons Award for her performance. She then returned to London to play the same role for three years at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
In 1964, Rogers appeared in the London West End production of She Loves Me, sharing the stage with Gary Raymond, Rita Moreno, Gary Miller, Karel Štěpánek, Peter Sallis, Gregory Phillips, and Carl Jaffe. Her Broadway career spanned from 1957 to 1980 and included appearances in Half a Sixpence, 42nd Street, and No, No, Nanette, as well as a starring role in My Fair Ladies.
In 2000, Rogers took on the role of Jessie Matthews in the West End production of Over My Shoulder. Five years later, she played Gladys in a gala New York performance of the musical Busker Alley, appearing alongside Jim Dale, Glenn Close, and George S. Irving.
In her personal life, Rogers was married to Michael Hall, the son of bandleader Henry Hall.
