About
Annaleigh Ashford, born Annaleigh Swanson on June 25, 1985, in Denver, Colorado, is an American actress, singer, and dancer whose Broadway career has spanned from 2003 to 2024. The daughter of Holli Swanson, an elementary school gym teacher, and Chris Swanson, a small-business owner, she began studying dance in the second grade at Kit Andrée's Dance and Performing Arts Center. Her professional stage work started at age nine, when she was cast as Tina Denmark, the lead in the musical Ruthless!, in Denver. Additional early regional credits included ensemble roles in The Sound of Music, West Side Story, and Paint Your Wagon, as well as principal roles such as Amy March in Little Women, Ella in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Sandy Dumbrowski in Grease, and Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes. At fourteen, she was profiled as "The Teen to Watch" by the Rocky Mountain News. Ashford graduated from Wheat Ridge High School at sixteen, completing the program in three years, and subsequently earned a theatre degree from Marymount Manhattan College in three years, at age nineteen. While there, she performed as Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Emma in Tell Me on a Sunday.
Before her Broadway debut, Ashford joined the first national tour of Wicked in December 2005, playing Pfanne and understudying the role of Glinda, departing in September 2006. She then originated the role of Margot in Legally Blonde: The Musical, which marked her Broadway debut. She understudied the lead role of Elle Woods, performing it once, and was featured on the original cast recording as well as the MTV televised broadcast of the show. In October 2007, she stepped into the Broadway production of Wicked as Glinda, replacing Kendra Kassebaum, and later transferred to the Chicago production in June 2008, playing her final performance in that role when the Chicago run closed in January 2009. In 2010, she joined the Broadway revival of Hair as Jeanie, succeeding Kacie Sheik in the role from March through the production's closing in June of that year.
Ashford's Broadway profile rose significantly with her role as Lauren in Kinky Boots, a musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. After appearing in the Chicago tryouts, she reprised the role in the 2013 Broadway production, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. She left the production in March 2014. The following year brought her greatest Broadway recognition to that point: her portrayal of Essie Carmichael in the 2014–2015 revival of You Can't Take It with You earned her the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. In 2017, she starred in the Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George, and she later headlined the play Sylvia on Broadway.
The 2023 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street brought Ashford her most substantial musical theater recognition to date. She starred as Mrs. Lovett, a role for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical. The cast recording of that production also earned her a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Musical Theater Album.
In parallel with her stage work, Ashford built a substantial screen career. She appeared as a recurring and later series regular in the Showtime period drama Masters of Sex from 2013 to 2016. Subsequent television credits include the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable in 2019, the HBO film Bad Education that same year, the FX drama Impeachment: American Crime Story in 2021, and the CBS sitcom B Positive from 2020 to 2022. Her performance as Irene in the Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales in 2022 earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. On the film side, she made her screen debut with a small role in Sex and the City: The Movie in 2008 and appeared the same year in Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married. In 2013, she provided a voice role in the animated film Frozen, delivering a short spoken line and singing a solo in the song "Fixer Upper." Ashford also released a debut album, Lost in the Stars: Live at 54 Below, in 2015.
