About

Anna Louise Friel, born on 12 July 1976 in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, is an English actress whose career spans television, film, and stage. Her father, Desmond Friel, was born in Belfast and raised in County Donegal, Ireland, and has worked as a French teacher, folk guitarist, and, as of 2020, a web designer. Her mother, Julie Bamford Friel, is a special needs teacher. Friel has a brother, Michael, who became a doctor and appeared in Hovis television advertisements during his youth. She attended Crompton House CE Secondary School and Holy Cross College before training at Oldham Theatre Workshop.

Friel made her professional debut at thirteen in the 1991 television miniseries G.B.H., which received multiple BAFTA nominations. Small roles on the ITV soap operas Coronation Street and Emmerdale followed in 1991 and 1992. She then joined the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside, where she played Beth Jordache from 1993 to 1995. The character was central to several of the series' most prominent storylines, among them the murder and concealed burial of her abusive father and what was the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss in British television history. That kiss was later included in a montage broadcast during the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, reaching audiences in 76 countries. In 1995, Friel received a National Television Award for Most Popular Actress for her work on the series.

Following Brookside, Friel appeared in a 1996 episode of Tales from the Crypt and co-starred in Stephen Poliakoff's television film The Tribe in 1998. That same year she took leading roles in small-screen adaptations of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend and Robert Louis Stevenson's St. Ives, and made her feature film debut in the wartime period drama The Land Girls. Additional film work in 1999 included the crime drama Rogue Trader and the comedy Mad Cows. She also played Hermia in the 1999 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream alongside Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christian Bale.

In 1999, Friel made her Broadway debut in Patrick Marber's Closer, which ran for 173 performances at the Music Box Theatre between March and August of that year. She played Alice, an exotic dancer, in the production. For that performance, Friel received both the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play and a Theatre World Award, both in 1999.

In 2001, Friel starred opposite Michelle Williams in the coming-of-age drama Me Without You and appeared in the comedy-drama An Everlasting Piece. She also made her West End stage debut that year in an adaptation of Frank Wedekind's Lulu at the Almeida Theatre, a production that subsequently transferred to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her West End credits also include Breakfast at Tiffany's in 2009 and Uncle Vanya in 2012. Among her other film appearances are Timeline (2003), Goal! (2005), Bathory (2008), Land of the Lost (2009), Limitless (2011), Books of Blood (2020), and Charming the Hearts of Men (2021). She earned a Genie Award nomination for Best Actress for the 2001 Canadian film The War Bride.

In 2004, Friel joined the cast of the Fox legal drama series The Jury, playing Attorney Megan Delaney in the show's single season. In November 2006, the University of Bolton awarded her an honorary doctorate for contributions to the performing arts. The following year, she was cast as Charlotte "Chuck" Charles in the ABC dramedy series Pushing Daisies, created by Bryan Fuller, which aired from 2007 to 2009. Her portrayal of the resurrected murder victim and beekeeper earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in 2008.

In 2017, Friel won the International Emmy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the title character in the British detective drama Marcella, which ran from 2016 to 2021. Her accolades across her career also include a BAFTA nomination.
