About

Anna Chandler (July 4, 1884 – July 10, 1957) was an American mezzo-soprano and vaudeville actress born in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Her performing career encompassed popular and light classical songs, and she maintained an active presence in both vaudeville and on Broadway between 1911 and 1929.

Chandler built her reputation as a headline artist on the Orpheum Circuit, where she performed songs in Hebrew and Italian almost exclusively during her time as a headliner. Her personal life included a marriage to Jack Curtis, a booking agent. The couple had one child, Beatrice Curtis, who pursued an acting career and whose first husband was the vaudevillian Harry Fox.

Her Broadway work produced two distinct roles across nearly two decades. In 1911 she appeared in the musical Jumping Jupiter, playing Mrs. Anastasia Kidd. In 1929 she returned to Broadway in the play Mendel, Inc., in which she portrayed Bessie Bloom.

Chandler also accumulated film credits, appearing in productions including The Big Broadcast (1932), Madame Racketeer (1932), Gold Rush Maisie (1940), Redhead (1941), Tennessee Johnson (1942), Thumbs Up (1943), and Master Minds (1949). Her recording work included releases on the Blue Amberol, Columbia, and Edison labels, among them Come Back, I'm Pining For You (1913) and You Can't Get Along With 'Em or Without 'Em, recorded on January 20, 1916. Her name appeared on sheet music covers for numerous songs published between 1915 and 1923, including America I Love You (1915) and I've Got The Love-Sick Blues (1922).

Chandler died at age 73 in El Sereno, California.
