About

Anna Carteret is a British stage and screen actress born Annabelle S. Wilkinson on 11 December 1942 in Bangalore, British India. The daughter of Peter John Wilkinson and Patricia Carteret Wilkinson (née Strahan), she trained for the stage at Arts Educational Schools in Tring, Hertfordshire, the institution now known as Tring Park School for the Performing Arts. Her theatre career, spanning from 1964 to 2015, is documented in the British online database Theatricalia.

Carteret made her Broadway debut in 1996 in An Ideal Husband, a credit for which she received the Theatre World Special Award that same year. On British television, she became widely recognized for playing police inspector Kate Longton in the BBC series Juliet Bravo during the 1980s. Her additional television work includes appearances in The Saint, The Pallisers, The Glittering Prizes, Star Maidens, Eskimo Day, Peak Practice, Holby City, and Casualty. In 1990, she appeared as a contestant on Cluedo, competing against John Stalker.

Her film work dates to 1959 and includes Dateline Diamonds (1965), The Plank (1967), Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (2005), and Private Peaceful (2012). For BBC Radio 4's The Afternoon Play, she portrayed Vivanti in Cats and Monkeys, a radio adaptation of Catherine Shepherd's stage play co-starring Jack Shepherd, last broadcast on 19 November 2007.

Carteret has also worked extensively in voice acting, providing the voice of Miriam in the Welsh Christian animated series Testament: The Bible in Animation and voicing every female character in the British children's series Forget Me Not Farm. Testament aired on both the BBC and S4C in Wales, while Forget Me Not Farm aired on the BBC. Following the death of Mike Amatt in 2021, who played Scarecrow in Forget Me Not Farm, Carteret became the last surviving cast member of that series.

In 1974, Carteret married television and film director Christopher Morahan; the two worked together frequently over the course of more than four decades. Their two daughters are theatre director Rebecca Morahan and actress Hattie Morahan. In June 2019, Carteret spoke publicly about her experience living with bipolar disorder since adolescence.
