About
Ann Dowd is an American actress born on January 30, 1956, in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She grew up in an Irish Catholic family with five siblings: John Dowd Jr., who serves as president of The Dowd Agencies, an insurance company founded by their great-grandfather; Elizabeth Dowd, a developmental therapist and parenting coach; Clare Dowd, executive director of the Creative Action Institute; Deborah Dowd, a psychotherapist and former president of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis; and Gregory Dowd, a doctor of veterinary medicine. Her paternal grandfather, James "Kip" Dowd, played professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dowd attended the Williston Northampton School, where she took part in school plays, though her family initially discouraged her from pursuing acting as a career. She enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, as a premed student while also taking acting classes, and graduated in 1978. Encouraged by instructors and her roommate to abandon plans for medical school, she traveled to New York City to audition for the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago, where she earned an MFA in Acting. During her time at DePaul, she received a scholarship from the Sarah Siddons Society, an honor previously awarded to Carrie Snodgress, and was classmates with Elizabeth Perkins. She also worked as a waitress while completing her studies.
Dowd's Broadway career spans 1993 to 2008 and includes three productions. Her debut came in 1993 in Candida, starring Mary Steenburgen, for which she received the Clarence Derwent Award. She returned to Broadway in 1996 for Taking Sides alongside Elizabeth Marvel and Vera Farmiga, who served as Dowd's understudy. Her third Broadway appearance was in a 2008 production of The Seagull, which starred Carey Mulligan and Kristin Scott Thomas. Beyond Broadway, Dowd earned three Jeff Awards for her work in Chicago theatre, including a 1987 Best Supporting Actress award for playing Emma Brookner in The Normal Heart. In 2007, she portrayed Sister Aloysius in Doubt at the George Street Playhouse, and in 2011 she performed Off-Broadway in Blood from a Stone, playing the mother of Ethan Hawke's character. She starred in Naomi Wallace's Night Is a Room at Signature Theater in 2015.
Her film career began with an appearance in Green Card in 1990, followed by Lorenzo's Oil in 1992. In 1993, she appeared in Philadelphia, directed by Jonathan Demme, playing Jill Beckett, the sister of Tom Hanks's character. She starred as Louise Preston in Shiloh (1997) and reprised the role in Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season (1999) and Saving Shiloh (2006). Additional film credits from the 1990s include the cult film All Over Me (1997) and Apt Pupil (1998), in which she played the mother of Brad Renfro's character. In 2004, she appeared in The Manchurian Candidate, again directed by Demme and starring Meryl Streep, as well as in Garden State, playing the mother of Natalie Portman's character, and in The Forgotten, starring Julianne Moore. The following year she portrayed Edna Page, the mother of Bettie Page, in The Notorious Bettie Page opposite Gretchen Mol, and in 2006 she played Mrs. Strank in Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers. She appeared in Marley & Me in 2008 and in two films directed by Steven Soderbergh: The Informant! (2009) and Side Effects (2013), in which she played the mother of Channing Tatum's character. Her performance in the 2012 Sundance Film Festival premiere Compliance, in which she played fast food restaurant manager Sandra, earned her the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress. Later film credits include St. Vincent (2014), Captain Fantastic (2016), the horror film Hereditary (2018), in which she played the supporting role of Joan, and Mass (2021), for which she received nominations for a British Academy Film Award and a Critics' Choice Award.
Dowd's television work dates to a 1985 television movie, First Steps, alongside Megan Mullally. She has appeared in numerous series, including Chicago Hope, The X-Files, Third Watch, NYPD Blue, Judging Amy, House, Louie, and Freaks and Geeks, in which she played the mother of Busy Philipps's character. In 1995, she portrayed Rose Long, Louisiana's first female senator, in the television movie Kingfish opposite John Goodman. She was a series regular on Nothing Sacred during its 1997–98 season, playing a nun, a role for which she received a VQT nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2008, she appeared in the television movie Taking Chance, starring Kevin Bacon. Dowd co-starred on the HBO series The Leftovers (2014–2017) as Patti Levin, leader of the Guilty Remnant, receiving a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Beginning in 2017, she played Aunt Lydia Clements on the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale, a role she continued through 2025, and for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In 2021, she was cast as Edna Garrett in the third installment of Live in Front of a Studio Audience on ABC, which featured both Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life.
Dowd and her husband, Lawrence "Larry" Arancio, met while both were students in Chicago. Arancio is a writer, acting coach, and acting chair for the CAP21 program, and has also taught at the HB Studio and Columbia College Chicago; he has worked with Lady Gaga as her acting coach. The couple both coach acting and frequently collaborate professionally. They have three children and reside in New York City. Dowd is a foster care advocate. On May 27, 2016, her alma mater, the College of the Holy Cross, conferred an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree upon her.
