About

Ann Brody, born Ann Brody Goldstein on August 29, 1884, in Poland, was an American stage and film actress whose career spanned several decades. She worked professionally under the name Ann Brody and died on July 16, 1944, in a New York City hotel room from what appeared to be natural causes.

Brody began performing on stage at the age of nine in a children's theatre in New York. She subsequently toured the United States with stock companies before transitioning to film. Her first screen appearance came in a 1912 Vitagraph production, and she went on to become a regular part of that studio, working alongside performers including Norma Talmadge, Wally Van, Hughie Mack, and Flora Finch. Through the 1920s she continued working in Hollywood film productions, becoming particularly recognized for her portrayals of Jewish mothers. In 1926, The Tennessean noted her affinity for what it described as "comedy with a tear" roles, citing the film Too Much Money as a vehicle well suited to her blend of comedy and pathos. The San Francisco Examiner observed in 1929 that the film My Man offered her one of her strongest screen performances, while the Pasadena Post that same year characterized her as "a specialist in character roles for films."

In 1933, the Los Angeles Evening Post-Record noted that Brody's "Jewish maternal characterizations are stage and screen classics" as she prepared to return to live theatre. During the mid-1930s she relocated back to New York to pursue Broadway work, appearing in productions including Antonia, Having Wonderful Time, and The Time of Your Life. Her Broadway career extended from 1925 to 1940. The year 1937 marked her 50th anniversary as a stage actress, an occasion that was publicly celebrated. Her final stage role came in the 1940 production of The Time of Your Life.
