About
Ann Forrest Bell, born on 29 April 1938 in Wallasey, Cheshire, England, is a British actress whose career has spanned stage, television, and film across several decades. The daughter of John Forrest Bell and Marjorie Bell, née Byrom, she received her education at Birkenhead High School before embarking on a professional acting career.
Bell is perhaps most widely recognized for her role as war internee Marion Jefferson in the BBC Second World War drama series Tenko, which ran from 1981 to 1984. Her television work began considerably earlier, however, with a notable appearance as the title character in a BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre in 1963. She subsequently accumulated an extensive list of guest credits across British television, appearing in such series as Edgar Wallace Mysteries, The Avengers, The Saint, Danger Man, Callan, Inspector Morse, Agatha Christie's Poirot, Midsomer Murders, Casualty, Holby City, and Waking the Dead, among many others. In 1968, she took part in Dennis Potter's television play Shaggy Dog, one of six productions comprising London Weekend Television's anthology series The Company of Five, in which the same five actors appeared throughout. That same year, she appeared in the Sherlock Holmes episode "The Sign of Four," alongside Peter Cushing, playing Mary Morstan.
Her film credits include Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), The Witches (1966), To Sir, with Love (1967), and Champions (1984), in which she played Valda Embiricos. Later film appearances include When Saturday Comes (1996), The Land Girls (1998), and Up at the Villa (2000).
Bell brought her talents to Broadway in 1966, appearing in Help Stamp Out Marriage!, marking her presence on the American stage during that period.
She was married to British character actor Robert Lang from 1971 until his death in 2004, and the couple had two children together. Bell and Lang appeared on screen together in Tenko Reunion, in which Lang portrayed Teddy Forster-Brown, and again in the Heartbeat episode "Bread and Circuses" in 2002. In 2010, Bell participated in the Doctor Who audio drama A Thousand Tiny Wings, and in 2012 she appeared in the audio play Night of the Stormcrow, which also featured her Tenko castmate Louise Jameson.
