About

Angela Paton (January 11, 1930 – May 26, 2016) was an American actress and theatre director whose career spanned stage, film, and television. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she built a professional life that extended from the regional theatre stages of the San Francisco Bay Area to Broadway and Hollywood.

Paton was a veteran performer at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, where she was among the leading actresses during its earliest seasons. After departing A.C.T. in the early 1970s, she and her husband, Robert Goldsby, co-founded the Berkeley Stage Company in Berkeley, California, which the two ran together for a number of years. Goldsby, a professor in UC Berkeley's Department of Drama, had also served as a stage director with A.C.T. and as the first director of its conservatory program.

Her Broadway career ran from 1969 to 2012 and included appearances in Harvey, Passion, and The Three Sisters. Beyond the stage, Paton accumulated credits in 38 films and more than 50 television series. Among her most recognized screen roles was Mrs. Lancaster, the innkeeper, in the 1993 comedy film Groundhog Day, as well as the role of Grandma in American Wedding in 2003.

Paton died of a heart attack on May 26, 2016. She was 86 years old.
