About

Angela Evelyn Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City, to Betty Jane Gilbert, a social worker and civil servant, and Daniel Benjamin Bassett, a preacher's son. Her middle name was given in honor of her aunt Evelyn. Shortly after her birth, family circumstances led her parents to send her to live with her paternal aunt Golden in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At age four, following her parents' divorce, her mother retrieved her and her sister D'nette and relocated the family to St. Petersburg, Florida.

Bassett's academic record in St. Petersburg was distinguished. She attended Jordan Park Elementary School before being bused to Disston Middle School for seventh grade in 1970, a year before St. Petersburg formally established busing to integrate its public schools. At Boca Ciega High School, she was a cheerleader, a member of the debate team, student government, drama club, and choir, and participated in the Upward Bound college prep program for underprivileged students. She became the first African American student at that school admitted to the National Honor Society.

Bassett earned a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from Yale University in 1980 and a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1983. At Yale she met actor Charles S. Dutton as a classmate and also encountered her future husband, actor Courtney B. Vance, who graduated from the drama school in 1986. After completing her graduate studies, she supported herself in New York by working as a receptionist at a beauty salon and as a photo researcher while pursuing acting work.

Her Broadway career spans from 1984 to 2011. Two of her earliest stage credits came through productions of August Wilson plays at the Yale Repertory Theatre, directed by Lloyd Richards: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in 1984 and Joe Turner's Come and Gone in 1986, both of which are among her verified Broadway credits. In 2011, she starred in The Mountaintop on Broadway. In 2006, outside of Broadway, she returned to the Wilson canon by appearing in Fences alongside Laurence Fishburne at the Pasadena Playhouse in California.

Bassett made her television debut in 1985 in the television film Doubletake and her film debut the following year in F/X, for which she joined the Screen Actors Guild. She relocated to Los Angeles in 1988 and began accumulating screen credits, including guest appearances on A Man Called Hawk and 227 in 1989. Her film work in the early 1990s, particularly Boyz n the Hood in 1991 and Malcolm X in 1992, brought her wider industry recognition. Her portrayal of Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X earned her an NAACP Image Award. That same week Malcolm X opened theatrically, she appeared on ABC as Katherine Jackson in the miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream.

Her breakthrough came with the 1993 biopic What's Love Got to Do with It, in which she portrayed singer Tina Turner. The role earned her a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. A string of prominent film roles followed throughout the 1990s, including Waiting to Exhale and Strange Days in 1995, How Stella Got Her Groove Back in 1998, and Music of the Heart in 1999.

On television, her portrayal of Rosa Parks in The Rosa Parks Story in 2002 brought her an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress. Her work across two seasons of the FX anthology series American Horror Story generated Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in both 2014 and 2015. Beginning in 2018, she took on the dual role of producer and star on the Fox and ABC drama series 9-1-1, playing LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Grant.

Bassett's later film career included supporting roles in Notorious in 2009, Green Lantern in 2011, Olympus Has Fallen in 2013, and London Has Fallen in 2016. She joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Queen Ramonda, appearing in Black Panther in 2018, Avengers: Endgame in 2019, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. Her performance in the last of these earned her a second Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Among her career accolades are an Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Academy Award nominations. In 2023, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and she received an Academy Honorary Award.
