About

Andrew Bennison (November 3, 1886 – January 7, 1942) was an American Broadway performer, screenwriter, and film director. Born in 1886, he appeared on Broadway in 1915 in Common Clay before transitioning to a career in film that would define the bulk of his professional life.

Bennison worked primarily as a screenwriter from 1923 until his death in 1942, contributing to approximately 40 American films during that period. In 1930, he co-directed Born Reckless alongside John Ford, a production that also featured a young John Wayne in an extra role. His directorial work was limited, as writing remained his principal contribution to the film industry throughout his career.

His screenwriting credits span nearly two decades and include The Greatest Menace (1923), Divorce (1923), Defying the Law (1924), The Wizard (1927), Woman Wise (1928), Sin Sister (1929), Strong Boy (1929), Words and Music (1929), and Let's Go Places (1930). His output continued into the sound era with This Sporting Age (1932), Pardon My Scotch (1935), A Ducking They Did Go (1939), Oily to Bed, Oily to Rise (1939), Chip of the Flying U (1940), and You'll Find Out (1940).

Bennison died in Oxnard, California in January 1942.
