About

Andrea Bowen is an American actress born on March 4, 1990, in Columbus, Ohio. Of Welsh, English, and German descent, she is one of six siblings — Graham, Alex, Cameron, Jessica, and Jillian Bowen — several of whom have also pursued careers in musical theatre and acting. Bowen attended the Professional Performing Arts School in New York, where she studied alongside Sarah Hyland.

Bowen's Broadway career began in 1996, when she made her debut in Les Misérables playing Young Cosette and Young Éponine. At six years old, she was the youngest actress ever to take on those roles. Her Broadway work continued through the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, during which she was also a member of The Broadway Kids concert group. In 1998, she joined the original company of the Broadway revival of The Sound of Music, portraying Marta von Trapp, and contributed to the production's cast recording released that same year. In 2000, Bowen created the role of Adèle in the musical adaptation of Jane Eyre, with the original cast recording released in 2001. She returned to The Sound of Music in 2006, this time performing in the Hollywood Bowl production in the role of Liesl.

In 2004, Bowen transitioned to television when she was cast as Julie Mayer on the ABC comedy-drama series Desperate Housewives. Prior to being cast, she noted that the production had been seeking a twelve-year-old brunette, while she was a thirteen-year-old blonde, and was asked to dye her hair for the role. She served as a series regular from 2004 to 2008, after which her character was written out following season four. She returned for a single episode in season five, rejoined the main cast as a regular for season six, appeared once in season seven, and returned for multiple episodes during the show's final season before it concluded in 2012. The cast of Desperate Housewives, including Bowen, received Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2005 and 2006. Bowen also received a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Leading Young Actress in 2005 and a Prism Award for Best TV Actress in 2008.

Alongside her work on Desperate Housewives, Bowen appeared in the 2006 film Red Riding Hood and played the role of Candace in the 2006 film Eye of the Dolphin. She also starred in the Lifetime Original film Girl, Positive. In 2013, she appeared in the teen comedy film G.B.F.

Following the conclusion of Desperate Housewives, Bowen guest starred on The Closer, Ghost Whisperer, Hawaii Five-0, and Scandal, and also had a recurring role on One Tree Hill. She took on leading roles in a number of television films for Lifetime and Hallmark, including After the Fall (2010), The Preacher's Daughter (2013), Zoe Gone (2014), Under Fire (2016), Pretty Little Addict (2016), and A Family for the Holidays (2017). As of August 29, 2024, Bowen is married to Josh Zuckerman, her former co-star on Desperate Housewives.
