About

Andrea Anders is an American actress born on May 10, 1975, in Madison, Wisconsin, the third child of Terrance and Sally Anders. She grew up in DeForest, Wisconsin, alongside her sister Torri and her brother Sean, and graduated from DeForest Area High School in 1993. Anders pursued formal training in acting at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1997, before relocating to New Jersey to attend Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts, completing a Master of Fine Arts in 2001. She also trained in the Meisner technique under instructor Maggie Flanigan, whom she credits as influential to her ongoing career.

Anders launched her theatrical career in 2001, serving as an understudy to Mary-Louise Parker in the Broadway production of Proof before taking on the role of Elaine Robinson in The Graduate on Broadway in 2002. Her stage work extended beyond Broadway to include On the Jump at the Arena Stage, New Doors at the Guthrie Theater, Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical, and two New York Stage and Film productions, Cold/Tender and New World Rhapsody. In May 2007, she appeared at the Geffen Playhouse in Fat Pig, playing Jeannie, an accountant, with the production closing on July 1 of that year.

Her early television work included appearances on the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light between 1998 and 2001, playing a nanny named Elaine on the former and an assistant named Ellie on the latter. In 2001, she appeared in a Law and Order episode, and in 2003 she took on a recurring role across five episodes of the HBO drama Oz as Donna Degenhart. Her film debut came in 2004 with a minor role in The Stepford Wives, in which she played a secretary to Nicole Kidman's character.

Anders became more widely recognized in July 2004 when she was cast as Alex Garrett in Joey, the Friends spin-off starring Matt LeBlanc, portraying the neighbor, landlady, and eventual love interest of the title character. NBC cancelled the series during its second season. She subsequently joined the CBS sitcom The Class in February 2006 as Nicole, the dissatisfied wife of a former professional football player who reconnects with a high school boyfriend. The show won the Favorite New TV Comedy Award at the 33rd People's Choice Awards but was not renewed for a second season.

In May 2008, Anders was cast in the satirical workplace comedy Better Off Ted, playing Linda Zwordling, the love interest of the main character and a co-worker at a fictional megacorporation. The series premiered in March 2009 as a midseason replacement and was renewed for a second season despite low ratings, though it was ultimately cancelled with its final two episodes unaired. She next appeared in Mr. Sunshine in February 2010, a comedy starring Matthew Perry in which Anders played Alice, a co-worker and friend with benefits seeking greater commitment. ABC cancelled the series after three months. Following that cancellation, she appeared in a four-episode arc in the first season of Necessary Roughness on USA Network, as a former girlfriend of Marc Blucas's character.

Throughout the early 2010s, Anders starred in a succession of television pilots that were not picked up to series, including Ladyfriends for NBC in 2012, Divorce: A Love Story for ABC in 2013, Cuz-Bros for CBS in 2014, How We Live and The Half of It in 2015, and Crunch Time in 2016. During this period she also appeared in recurring roles on About a Boy and Modern Family, the latter casting her as the Dunphy family's new neighbor. In 2012 she filmed a supporting role in the television film Return to Zero, which aired on Lifetime in 2014. In 2016 she led the comedy film Is That a Gun in Your Pocket?, set in a small Texas town where women withhold sex until their partners give up their guns.

Anders has maintained a recurring professional collaboration with her older brother, director and producer Sean Anders. She appeared in his debut film Never Been Thawed, followed by roles in Sex Drive, Daddy's Home 2, Instant Family, Countdown, and Spirited. Her additional film credits include Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. On television, she has had recurring and guest appearances on series including Cruel Summer, Young Sheldon, Modern Family, Ted Lasso, and That '90s Show. She has also been cast in nearly ten produced but unsold pilots across her career. Anders is perhaps most broadly recognized for her lead roles across five short-lived sitcoms: Joey, The Class, Better Off Ted, Mr. Sunshine, and Mr. Mom.
