About
Amy Spanger is an American actress, singer, and dancer born on May 21, 1971, in Newbury, Massachusetts. Her Broadway career spanned from 1994 to 2013, during which she originated several notable roles and appeared in a range of musicals and plays.
Spanger's path to Broadway included a half-year run in the pre-Broadway national tour of Jekyll & Hyde before she made her Broadway debut in 1995 in the musical Sunset Boulevard. She went on to originate the role of Lois Lane, also known as Bianca, in the Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate. In the Broadway production of Chicago, she played Roxie Hart, and in Urinetown she portrayed Hope Cladwell. She also appeared in the comedy The Silver Wedding.
In 2006, Spanger originated the role of Holly in The Wedding Singer, a credit for which she received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. That same year, she appeared in Feeling Electric, a production that later evolved into the musical Next to Normal, in which she co-starred with actor Anthony Rapp. Additional stage credits include the production Lunch.
Spanger originated the role of Sherrie in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, taking an extended leave in early June 2009 for vocal rest before permanently departing the production on June 29 of that year for personal reasons. She subsequently originated the role of Jovie in the Broadway stage adaptation of the Will Ferrell film Elf, which ran for nine weeks at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and closed on January 2, 2011. On September 8, 2015, she joined the Broadway cast of Matilda the Musical as Mrs. Wormwood.
Beyond Broadway, Spanger originated the role of Susan in the off-Broadway production of Jonathan Larson's musical tick, tick... BOOM! and appeared in national touring companies of both Rent and Chicago. Her screen credits include television appearances on Ed, Becker, Egg: The Arts Show, Six Feet Under, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Michael & Michael Have Issues, and Bored to Death. She starred as Sally in the 2005 Showtime film musical Reefer Madness and appeared in the 2008 Charlie Kaufman film Synecdoche, New York.
Spanger married actor Michael C. Hall on May 1, 2002. Following their wedding, Hall performed as Billy Flynn opposite Spanger's Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago. The couple separated in 2005 and divorced in 2006.
