About
Amy Douglass (December 21, 1902 – March 5, 1980) was an American actress born in Mansfield, Ohio. Her career spanned stage, television, and film across several decades, beginning with Broadway appearances in the mid-to-late 1940s and extending through work in Hollywood productions into the late 1970s.
Douglass appeared on Broadway between 1945 and 1950, accumulating credits that included Mr. Barry's Etchings, Kiss Them for Me, the dramatic adaptation Crime and Punishment, and Life With Mother.
Her television work began in 1950 with an uncredited appearance on Actors Studio. Throughout the 1950s she took on roles in Suspicion, playing Jean, Markham's Secretary, The Thin Man, in which she portrayed Lucy Van Horn, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, where she appeared as Mrs. Logan in the fifth-season episode "Appointment at Eleven." The 1960s brought additional television credits, including Mrs. Toland in Dennis the Menace, Mrs. Gray in 77 Sunset Strip, Mrs. Carson in Thriller, Miss Sherry in Stoney Burke, a role in Ben Casey, and Mrs. Wilk in The Invaders.
On film, Douglass played Mrs. Fitzgerald in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), an old woman in a car in the television film Duel (1971), and Implantee #1 in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), which served as her final screen role. Her additional film appearances included uncredited parts in Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Where the Boys Are, All in a Night's Work, and Ada, as well as a credited role as Mrs. Bradville in Ada.
Douglass died in Los Angeles, California, on March 5, 1980.
