About
David Amick Byram was born on January 24, 1955, in McLennan County, Texas. He graduated from Oral Roberts University in 1977 and was recognized by the institution as its Alumnus of the Year in 2014. Based in Los Angeles, California, Byram has built a career as a singer, stage performer, and sessions artist, earning two Grammy nominations over the course of his work in the industry.
Byram's Broadway career spanned from 1988 to 1994 and included three productions: The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and Sunset Boulevard. In Les Misérables, he played Joly and served as an understudy for the role of Enjolras. In Sunset Boulevard, he portrayed Joe Gillis opposite Glenn Close. His stage work extended beyond Broadway to include a Los Angeles production of The Phantom of the Opera and a stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he played Jesus. In 1994, he appeared on the recording of Jekyll & Hyde as Sir Archibald Proops.
As a sessions artist, Byram contributed vocally to a number of major film productions. He is best known for providing the singing voice of Moses in The Prince of Egypt. His additional film vocal contributions include Shrek, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, The Road to El Dorado, and The Matrix.
On television, Byram portrayed Ian Andrew Troi, the father of Counselor Troi, in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and made appearances on The Simpsons and Quincy, M.E. Around 2015 and 2016, he guested on Hour of Power with Bobby Schuller.
Byram is the co-founder and producing director of the American Coast Theater Company. He is married to actress and singer Cassandra Byram and is the brother of gospel singer Danny Byram.
