About
Amanda McBroom, born August 9, 1947, is an American actress, singer, and songwriter whose work spans Broadway, television, film, and recorded music. She made her Broadway debut in Seesaw, the musical composed by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Dorothy Fields, appearing in the production in 1973. Prior to that credit, McBroom performed in multiple productions of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, taking the stage in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and European engagements.
As a songwriter, McBroom is perhaps best recognized for composing "The Rose," the title song recorded by Bette Midler for the 1979 film of the same name. The song has since been recorded by numerous other artists. McBroom has also worked extensively as a lyricist in collaboration with songwriter Michele Brourman, together contributing lyrics to 14 animated films. Their projects include entries in The Land Before Time film series and Balto II: Wolf Quest. The pair also wrote the musical Dangerous Beauty, based on the film of the same name, which received its world premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse on February 13, 2011.
McBroom's television acting career includes guest-starring and recurring roles across a wide range of series, among them M*A*S*H, Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O, Magnum, P.I., Lou Grant, Taxi, Hart to Hart, Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Remington Steele, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Dance Your Pants Off!, and Love, American Style. She additionally provided voice work for several animated children's programs, including The Smurfs, Wildfire, Challenge of the GoBots, The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang, and The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show.
In 2016, McBroom launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new album, raising more than $43,000. The resulting record, titled Voices, was released in 2017.
