About
Alma Cuervo is an American stage actress and singer born on August 13, 1951, in Tampa, Florida. A graduate of Tulane University, she has worked across Broadway, national touring productions, film, and television throughout a career spanning several decades.
Cuervo's Broadway work extends from 1978 to 2017 and encompasses a range of productions. Among her most notable credits is the original Broadway cast of Titanic, the Tony Award-winning musical, in which she portrayed Ida Straus. Additional Broadway appearances include Dancing at Lughnasa, Cabaret, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and On Your Feet!, the latter of which featured her as Consuelo, the grandmother of Gloria Estefan, a role she originated when the production opened in 2015. Other Broadway credits include Beauty and the Beast and Once in a Lifetime.
Beyond Broadway, Cuervo took on the role of Madame Morrible in the first national tour of Wicked, stepping into the part on March 8, 2006, replacing Carole Shelley. She departed the production on January 14, 2007, to join the first national tour of My Fair Lady, and was replaced in Wicked by Barbara Tirrell. Following My Fair Lady, she returned to the Wicked tour, performing in the role from November 14, 2007, through July 14, 2008, after which Myra Lucretia Taylor succeeded her. She also appeared as Cinderella's Stepmother, Granny, and the Giant's Wife in a 25th anniversary co-production of Into the Woods staged by Baltimore's Center Stage and Westport Country Playhouse.
In 2011, Cuervo originated the role of Hilary in Susan Charlotte's play The Shoemaker, directed by Antony Marsellis and performed alongside Danny Aiello and Lucy DeVito. In July 2023, she originated the role of Ana Sofia in the Leeds Playhouse world premiere of In Dreams, a new musical based on the music of Roy Orbison, written by David West Read and directed by Luke Sheppard.
