About
Allan Miller, born February 14, 1929, is an American actor whose career has spanned stage, film, and television. His Broadway appearances extended from 1962 to 2005 and included the productions Romulus, Cabaret, Brooklyn Boy, and Have I Got a Girl for You!
Miller's path to acting began during his military service following World War II, when he noticed an advertisement in Stars and Stripes seeking performers to entertain troops during the U.S. Army's occupation of Japan. After returning to the United States in 1948, he enrolled in Erwin Piscator's Dramatic Workshop at The New School for Social Research in New York. He subsequently studied under Uta Hagen, alongside classmates Geraldine Page and Charles Nelson Reilly, and later trained under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, where his classmates included James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman.
Miller's work as an acting teacher became a significant part of his professional life. In 1958, under Strasberg's sponsorship, he began teaching at the Dramatic Workshop, and by 1960 he had transitioned to private instruction, counting a teenaged Barbra Streisand among his students. During the 1970s he taught at Yale Drama School. He is the author of the book A Passion for Acting and a DVD titled Auditioning. He also wrote the play The Fox, adapted from D.H. Lawrence's novella, which was produced in Los Angeles, Off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City, and has continued to be staged across the United States and internationally.
From 1979 to 1989, Miller served as producing director of the Back Alley Theatre, which he created and operated with his wife, Laura Zucker. He was also a primary plaintiff in a landmark lawsuit between Actors' Equity Association and Los Angeles-based small theaters concerning the Equity Waiver Plan.
On television, Miller appeared in Kojak, The Rockford Files, The Streets of San Francisco, Hawaii Five-O, Wonder Woman, Dallas, and The Paper Chase, among other programs. His film credits include Baby Blue Marine (1976), Two-Minute Warning (1976), Fun with Dick and Jane (1977), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), and Brewster's Millions (1985).
Miller was first married to actress Anita Cooper, who is deceased. In 1976 he married Laura Zucker, who served for 25 years as executive director of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
