About
Allan John Jeayes (19 January 1885 – 20 September 1963) was an English actor who worked in both stage and film. Born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, he was the son of Isaac Herbert Jeayes, who served as an archivist and Assistant Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum. Jeayes received his education at Merchant Taylor's School and initially pursued a career in farming before making his stage debut in 1906.
His screen career began with the 1918 film Nelson, in which he portrayed Sir William Hamilton. Over the course of his film work, Jeayes appeared in several productions associated with the prominent producer Alexander Korda. His final screen appearance came in the 1962 film Reach for Glory, a career spanning more than four decades in cinema.
On stage, Jeayes appeared on Broadway in 1927, taking the role of Howard Joyce in the original Broadway production of The Letter. He later appeared in the 1943 London production of And Then There Were None, in which he played Sir Lawrence Wargrave.
Jeayes died on 20 September 1963 in Marylebone, London, at the age of 78. The National Portrait Gallery in London holds two photographic portraits of him.
