About
Allan Heinberg, born June 29, 1967, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is an American writer and producer whose work spans Broadway, television, film, and comic books. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, he went on to attend Yale University, where he was a member of Morse College and graduated with the class of 1989.
Heinberg began his career in the theater, appearing on Broadway in 1993 in the cast of Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor. His stage work also included off-Broadway productions, among them Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh and the Vineyard Theatre's production of Bob Merrill's Hannah...1939, which starred Julie Wilson. In 1994, his stageplay The Amazon's Voice, produced off-Broadway by the Manhattan Class Company with Tim Blake Nelson and Ellen Parker in lead roles, helped launch his career as a screenwriter.
In television, Heinberg accumulated writing and producing credits across more than a decade of prominent series, including The Naked Truth, Party of Five, Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls, The O.C., Grey's Anatomy, Looking, and Scandal. He developed, wrote, and served as showrunner on ABC's The Catch, starring Mireille Enos and Peter Krause. In 2012, he served as executive producer on The CW's unaired pilot for the Wonder Woman origin series Amazon. He later developed the 2022 Netflix adaptation of The Sandman, executive producing the series alongside Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer.
In film, Heinberg wrote the screenplay for the 2017 superhero film Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, and co-wrote the story with Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs.
Heinberg's comic book work has been equally notable. For Marvel Comics, he co-created Young Avengers with artist Jim Cheung, introducing characters including Kate Bishop, Hulkling, Iron Lad, Patriot (Eli Bradley), Speed, and Wiccan. The series earned him the 2005 Wizard Fan Award for Breakout Talent. He returned to the Young Avengers mythology during the 2010–2011 Children's Crusade storyline, again collaborating with Cheung. For DC Comics, he co-wrote a five-issue arc of JLA titled Crisis of Conscience with Geoff Johns, with art by Chris Batista, and relaunched the Wonder Woman title with artists Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson following the Infinite Crisis limited series.
