About
Alla Borisovna Pokrovskaya was a Soviet-Russian actress and educator born in Moscow on 18 September 1937. Her father was the opera director Boris Pokrovsky, and her mother, Anna Nekrasova, served as director of the Central Children's Theatre. Despite this theatrical household, her parents did not encourage her acting abilities. She initially pursued a path in teaching before ultimately turning to acting as her profession.
Pokrovskaya trained at the Moscow Art Theater School, graduating in 1959. During her studies she volunteered as a stagehand at Oleg Efremov's theatre, where she observed performances by Igor Kvasha, Galina Volchek, and Yevgeny Yevstigneyev at the Sovremennik Theatre. She was married to actor Oleg Yefremov and went on to become a professor at the Moscow Art Theatre School.
Her screen work included roles in the films Take Aim, Fox Hunting, and July Rain. Among her later film appearances was Vysotsky. Thank You For Being Alive, in which she portrayed the mother of Vladimir Vysotsky.
In 1996, Pokrovskaya brought her career to Broadway, appearing in Into the Whirlwind.
She died on 25 June 2019 at a Moscow hospital at the age of 81, following sepsis caused by liver disease.
