About

Alice Pearce (October 16, 1917 – March 3, 1966) was an American actress born in New York City, the only child of Margaret Clark and Robert E. Pearce. Her father worked as a foreign banking specialist, and when Pearce was eighteen months old, the family relocated to Europe, living in Brussels, Antwerp, Rome, and Paris before she returned to the United States as a teenager. She boarded at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and went on to earn a degree in drama from Sarah Lawrence College in 1940. At age nine, a fall from a swing left her with an underdeveloped chin, a physical characteristic that would later inform her comedic screen presence.

After graduating, Pearce began performing as a comedienne in nightclubs before making her Broadway debut. Her stage career spanned from 1942 to 1961 and included productions such as On the Town, The Grass Harp, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, John Murray Anderson's Almanac, and Copper and Brass. Her role in the original Broadway production of On the Town, which ran from 1944 to 1946, drew the attention of Gene Kelly, who arranged for her to reprise the performance in the 1949 film adaptation — making her the only member of the original cast to appear in the movie. It was also during her Broadway work that she met her second husband, stage manager Paul Davis, during a production of Bells Are Ringing.

Pearce's film work led to a broader television presence. During the 1953–1954 season, she appeared regularly on the ABC series Jamie, which starred Brandon deWilde. She also hosted her own program, The Alice Pearce Show. In 1964, she was approached to play Grandmama in ABC's The Addams Family but declined the role, which was subsequently filled by Blossom Rock. Later that same year, Pearce joined the cast of Bewitched as Gladys Kravitz, the perpetually suspicious neighbor whose frantic reports of witchcraft at the house across the street were routinely dismissed by her husband Abner, played by George Tobias. Her scenes largely consisted of reactions to the supernatural activities of Samantha, portrayed by Elizabeth Montgomery, and her character served as a recurring comic thread throughout the series' early episodes.

Pearce had been diagnosed with terminal cancer before Bewitched began production. She kept her illness private, though noticeable weight loss during the second season made her condition increasingly apparent. She filmed her final episode, "Baby's First Paragraph," on January 21, 1966, and died from ovarian cancer on March 3, 1966, at the age of 48. She was cremated and her ashes scattered at sea. Pearce was posthumously awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, with her husband accepting the honor on her behalf. She was replaced in the role of Gladys Kravitz by Sandra Gould.

Pearce was married twice. Her first marriage, to composer John Rox in 1948, ended with his death in 1957. In September 1964, she married Paul Davis, with whom she co-owned Pesha's Framing Shop, an art gallery and framing store in West Hollywood. Davis died in February 1984.
