About
Alice Fleming (August 9, 1882 – December 6, 1952) was an American actress born in Brooklyn, New York, who built a career spanning stage, silent film, and sound-era motion pictures. She is perhaps most widely recognized for her recurring role as the Duchess, the aunt of Wild Bill Elliott's character, in Republic Pictures' Red Ryder Western film series.
Fleming began her stage career as a leading actress with the Harry Davis, Baker, and Percy G. Williams stock companies before establishing herself on Broadway. Her Broadway work extended from 1921 to 1939 and encompassed more than a dozen productions. Her earliest credited Broadway appearance was As Ye Mould in 1921, followed by The Masked Woman in 1922. In 1923 she appeared in both Morphia and The Lullaby, and in 1924 she took part in So This Is Politics, also known as Strange Bedfellows. The year 1925 brought two additional credits, The Pelican and Thrills. Her later Broadway work included Stick-in-the-Mud in 1935, One More Honeymoon in 1934, and two productions in 1938, 30 Days Hath September and Window Shopping. Her final Broadway credit was When We Are Married in 1939.
Alongside her stage work, Fleming appeared in silent films, where she was typically cast as a young society matron. Among these early screen appearances was the 1921 film His Greatest Sacrifice, in which she played the wife of William Farnum. She continued working in film into the sound era, with her final screen credit being Storm Over Lisbon in 1944.
In 1910, Fleming married real estate agent Clarence V. Everett. She subsequently married William Day. Fleming died on December 6, 1952, in New York City.
