About
Alice Sophia Eve, born on 6 February 1982 in London, England, is a British and American actress. The daughter of actors Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan, she attended Bedales School, More House School, and Westminster School in London before spending her gap year studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. She subsequently read English at St Catherine's College, Oxford, where she appeared in student productions including The Importance of Being Earnest, Animal Crackers, which toured to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Scenes from an Execution.
Eve launched her professional acting career with supporting roles in the films Hawking and Stage Beauty, both released in 2004. She also appeared in BBC television productions including The Rotters' Club and Agatha Christie's Poirot during this period. In 2006, she starred in two comedy films, Starter for 10 and Big Nothing, the latter alongside Simon Pegg, in which both performers adopted American accents. Earlier that year, she spent time in India filming the drama miniseries Losing Gemma.
Her stage work has included two productions directed by Trevor Nunn. In 2006, Eve originated the role of young Esme/Alice in Tom Stoppard's then-new play Rock 'n' Roll at the Royal Court Theatre. She reprised the role when the production transferred to Broadway in 2007, earning a nomination for best supporting actress at the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers' Choice Awards. In 2009, she played Roxane in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
Eve's film career expanded considerably in the following years. In 2010, she took the female lead in the American romantic comedy She's Out of My League, in which her parents portrayed her character's parents, and appeared as Charlotte York's Irish nanny Erin in Sex and the City 2. In 2012, she played the younger 1969 version of Agent O in Men in Black 3, a role played in its older incarnation by Emma Thompson. The following year, she portrayed Dr. Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness, the second film in J.J. Abrams's reboot of the franchise, and co-starred with Chris Evans in the romantic drama Before We Go, which Evans also directed. She played herself in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb in 2014, and subsequently appeared in the action thriller Criminal in 2016 and an episode of the anthology series Black Mirror titled "Nosedive" the same year. Later film credits include Please Stand By (2017), Replicas (2018), and Bombshell (2019).
On television, Eve had a recurring guest role in season 8 of HBO's Entourage in 2011, playing Sophia, a journalist and love interest to Vincent Chase. In December 2017, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe television series Iron Fist as Mary Walker, and later appeared in a recurring role on Amazon Prime's The Power in 2023. She also appeared in Paul McCartney's music video "Queenie Eye" in 2013 and Rixton's "Hotel Ceiling" in 2015.
In her personal life, Eve met financier Alex Cowper-Smith while attending Westminster School. The two became engaged in August 2014 and married on 31 December 2014, later divorcing in 2017. She became a naturalized American citizen in November 2017 and divides her time between London and Los Angeles. Eve has heterochromia, a condition resulting in irises of different colors; her left eye is blue and her right eye is green.
