About
Alfred Cornelius Lynch (26 January 1931 – 16 December 2003) was an English actor who worked across stage, film, and television. Born in Whitechapel, London, he was the son of a plumber and received his early education at a Catholic school. Before pursuing acting, Lynch worked as a draughtsman in a drawing office and later in a factory, during which time he attended evening classes in theatre acting. It was at those classes that he met his life partner, James Culliford. He also completed national service in the army prior to beginning his professional career.
Lynch joined the Royal Court Theatre in 1958, where he appeared in several productions including original stagings of Arnold Wesker's Chicken Soup with Barley and The Kitchen. He subsequently took a starring role in Joan Littlewood's production of Brendan Behan's The Hostage, a production that transferred from London to New York. His performance drew praise from critic Kenneth Tynan, who noted his beautiful playing. The New York run brought Lynch to Broadway in 1960, marking his sole credited appearance on the American stage.
Following his Broadway appearance, Lynch's career shifted increasingly toward screen work. His film credits from the early 1960s included leading roles in On the Fiddle (1961) and West 11 (1962), as well as prominent parts in Two and Two Make Six and The Password Is Courage, both released in 1962. He appeared in supporting capacities in 55 Days at Peking (1963) and The Hill (1965). Later film roles included Tranio in The Taming of the Shrew (1967), Medvedenko in The Sea Gull (1968), and Charlie Kray in The Krays (1990).
Lynch maintained a substantial television career alongside his film work. He held the title role in the series Hereward the Wake (1965), though that production is now considered lost, and led the cast of Manhunt (1969). He contributed to anthology series including Theatre 625, The Wednesday Play, and Armchair Theatre. In later years he appeared in Jackanory, Going Straight, Bergerac, Lovejoy, and Pie in the Sky, and played Commander Millington in the Doctor Who serial The Curse of Fenric.
After his partner Culliford suffered a stroke in 1972, Lynch relocated from London to Saltdean, near Brighton. He died of cancer on 16 December 2003 and was cremated at Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton.
