About
Alfred Hollingsworth was an American actor and playwright whose career spanned stage, screen, and behind-the-camera work across several decades. He made his Broadway appearance in 1899, performing in Zaza.
Hollingsworth transitioned into silent film work, appearing in dozens of pictures between 1911 and 1925. His screen career began with Lady Godiva in 1911 and encompassed a wide range of productions, including Hell's Hinges, The Three Musketeers, and The Beggar of Cawnpore, all from 1916. That same year he also appeared in Love's Bitter Strength, Purity, The Sable Blessing, and The Right Direction. His subsequent film appearances included The Gilded Youth, The Girl and the Crisis, Polly Ann, and The Sawdust Ring in 1917, followed by Fair Enough in 1918. In 1919 alone he appeared in numerous productions, among them The Hawk's Trail, A Man's Country, The Uplifters, 23 1/2 Hours' Leave, The Joyous Liar, Diane of the Green Van, As the Sun Went Down, and Leave It to Susan. His later credits included White Youth and The Leopard Woman in 1920, The Infamous Miss Revell in 1921, Trimmed, The Egg, and The Bearcat in 1922, The Phantom Fortune in 1923, and Marry in Haste in 1924.
In addition to acting, Hollingsworth directed four short films in 1916, including The Dreamer. He also worked as a playwright, authoring Mills of the Gods, a five-act drama, in 1908. In 1919 he wrote a play titled Crisis, and in 1922 he copyrighted Prodigal Son, a travesty in three acts.
Hollingsworth died on June 20, 1926, at Windsor Hospital in Glendale, California, at the age of 52.
