About
Alfred Hickman (25 February 1873 – 9 April 1931) was an English actor born in London who built a career spanning the British and American stage as well as film. He was married to actress Nance O'Neil.
Hickman began performing on the British stage in the early 1890s. In 1894 he took on the role of Valentine in William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at Daly's Theatre. His American career commenced shortly thereafter, when he was cast as William Bagot in Paul M. Potter's Trilby. He first performed the role at the Boston Museum before bringing it to the Garden Theatre on Broadway in 1895, marking his Broadway debut and his initial rise to prominence on the American stage.
Over the following three decades, Hickman returned to Broadway repeatedly. His credits included the roles of Hawtrey Treebohm and Lawrence Trenwithou in Tommy Rot in 1902, Venderhyphen Jenks in Nancy Brown in 1903, and a starring role in the musical The Rogers Brothers in Panama. He also appeared in the productions After Five and Fog-Bound. In 1926 he played Dr. McPhail in Rain, a production that was among his final Broadway appearances before his Broadway career concluded in 1927.
Alongside his stage work, Hickman appeared in 35 films between 1914 and 1931, extending his performing career into the medium of cinema during the same years he remained active on Broadway.
