About
Alfonso Esparza Oteo was a Mexican composer and Broadway performer born on 2 August 1894 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He died on 31 January 1950 in Mexico City.
Oteo established his reputation among Mexico City audiences early in his career, with a foxtrot serving as his initial breakthrough with local music fans. His compositions achieved widespread popularity throughout the 1920s. Among his works was "El Limoncito," a piece that carried a notable historical footnote: Mexican president Álvaro Obregón was listening to it at the moment of his assassination.
Two of Oteo's compositions were later arranged for the album Rolando Villazón: ¡Mexico!, released on Deutsche Grammophon (catalog number 4779234). "Dime que sí" appeared on the album in an arrangement by Efraín Oscher, while "Un viejo amor" was arranged by Gonzalo Grau for the same recording.
In addition to his work as a composer, Oteo performed on Broadway. In 1939 he appeared in the production Mexicana, bringing his presence to the New York stage. His recordings are documented in the Discography of American Historical Recordings.
