About

Alfred Giovanni Roncalli Boe was born on 29 September 1973 in Blackpool, Lancashire, the youngest of nine children. He was raised in the nearby town of Fleetwood and is of Irish and Norwegian descent. His parents named him after the Italian name of Pope John XXIII. Boe attended St Wulstan's and St Edmund's School and Cardinal Allen Catholic High School in Fleetwood, where his earliest musical influences came from listening to his father's Richard Tauber records, through which he also first encountered Puccini's La bohème. He gave his first public performance at age 14 at Fleetwood's Marine Hall in a "Songs from the Shows" presentation organized by local singing teacher Lottie Dawson.

At 17, Boe took a job as an apprentice mechanic at the TVR factory in Bispham, Blackpool. While polishing cars, he would sing opera arias for his colleagues, and on one occasion was overheard by a client with connections in the music industry. That client encouraged Boe to travel to London and audition for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. The audition was successful, and Boe left the factory to pursue a singing career. He has since been unable to identify the client who set him on that path, having lost the man's business card.

After relocating to London, Boe studied at the Royal College of Music, the National Opera Studio, and the Royal Opera House's Vilar Young Artists Programme. In 1999, he sang Ernesto for Scottish Opera in their Opera-Go-Round touring production of Don Pasquale, and that same year and in 2000 he appeared as the "opera dude" on albums by the Clint Boon Experience, the project led by the former organist of the Inspiral Carpets.

Boe's Broadway career began when director Baz Luhrmann, after two years of searching for a lead, approached him for his revival of La bohème. Boe appeared in the 2002 production, credited as Alfred Boe, and was also featured on the cast recording released by Bazmark Live. He and the other principal leads received the Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre in 2003. Boe has additionally performed the role of Rodolfo at Glyndebourne and the English National Opera.

Boe returned to Broadway in 2015, taking over the role of Jean Valjean in the revival of Les Misérables at the Imperial Theatre in New York City on 1 September 2015, succeeding Ramin Karimloo. His association with the role of Valjean spans multiple productions: he performed it at the 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 Arena in London on 3 October 2010, a performance released on DVD and Blu-ray. At that concert, a quartet performance of "Bring Him Home" featuring Boe alongside Colm Wilkinson, John Owen-Jones, and Simon Bowman was re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios and released as a charity single on 13 December 2010. On 16 December 2010, Boe performed as Valjean at the Royal Variety Performance before Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. He then played the role at the Queen's Theatre in London from 23 June to 26 November 2011, with Matt Lucas joining the cast as Thénardier. In 2019, Boe reprised Valjean in a staged concert production of Les Misérables at the Gielgud Theatre, sharing the role with John Owen-Jones and starring opposite Michael Ball as Inspector Javert and Lucas as Thénardier. That production ran from 10 August to 2 December 2019. In 2024, Boe shared the role of Valjean with Killian Donnelly in Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular World Tour, performing the UK and Australia stops of the tour alongside Ball and Bradley Jaden sharing the role of Javert.

Boe also appeared on Broadway in Finding Neverland, playing the leading role of J. M. Barrie from 29 March to 12 June 2016. In 2017, he starred as Billy Bigelow in a limited run of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel at the English National Opera, directed by Lonny Price and running from 7 April to 13 May, opposite mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins. In January 2011, he performed for English National Opera in both La Bohème and The Mikado, and in April of that year appeared in The Great British Musical at the Criterion Theatre.

Beyond the stage, Boe has built a substantial recording career. In 2006, he became the first signing on the Classic FM Presents label, releasing an album that reached number three in the UK classical chart. He signed with EMI Classics in November 2006, releasing the album Onward in March 2007. His album La Passione, a collection of Neapolitan songs, followed in November 2007. He was nominated for a Classical BRIT for Best Album in 2007, losing to Paul McCartney at the 3 May ceremony. Boe has sold more than one million albums in the United Kingdom. Among his more recent projects is Together in Vegas, a collaboration with Michael Ball, and in October 2022 he announced a solo tour for 2023.

Boe has also been involved in educational initiatives. In March 2007, he was appointed ambassador of the Prince of Wales Arts & Kids Foundation, a British educational charity dedicated to introducing children to the arts, with his role focused specifically on bringing music and opera to young audiences. In January 2008, he performed at the Pleasure Beach Arena in Blackpool for more than 1,600 local children as part of a Music Quest concert marking the end of a three-year project sponsored by the Prince of Wales Arts & Kids Foundation and Classic FM MusicMakers.
