Allen attended Windlesham House School in Sussex, Embley Park School near Romsey, St John's College in Portsmouth, and the Fine Arts College in Hampstead.
Allen made his first professional appearance in 1998 in the Channel 4 comedy You Are Here, co-written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams. That same year, he and his sister Lily appeared in the film Elizabeth, produced by their mother. Early roles followed in Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, directed by his uncle, and in the film Atonement. He also appeared in the BBC1 historical drama Casualty 1907 as Nobby Clark. In 2016, he filmed a two-part History Channel documentary directed by Mike Christie, Football: A Brief History, about the origins of association football. That same year, he played Ringwood in the BBC Two miniseries Close to the Enemy and joined the London production of Jesse Eisenberg's The Spoils at Trafalgar Studios. Allen co-starred as Lynch in the 2018 sci-fi sequel The Predator and appeared in two 2019 productions: Taika Waititi's Oscar-nominated dark comedy Jojo Rabbit as Finkel, and the coming-of-age film How to Build a Girl as John Kite.
