About
Alexandra Socha is an American actress born on April 10, 1990, in Nashua, New Hampshire, where she was raised as an only child by her parents, Joan Storey and Thad Socha. She began performing at an early age through community theater productions alongside her parents and later joined the Peacock Players of Nashua, where she played Amneris in the musical Aida in 2006. She also gained professional experience with the American Stage Festival and The Lyric Stage before transitioning to Broadway.
Socha made her Broadway debut in the rock musical Spring Awakening on July 24, 2007, after completing her junior year at Nashua High South. She entered the production as an ensemble member, replacing Krysta Rodriguez, and understudied the roles of Wendla, Thea, Anna, and Martha. On May 20, 2008, she took over the role of Wendla fulltime from Lea Michele, earning positive notices in the Daily News and The New York Times. She remained with the production through the end of its run. That same year, she graduated from Nashua High South after completing a home study program.
Her next Broadway appearance came in October 2009 with the short-lived revival of Brighton Beach Memoirs, in which she played Nora. During the years that followed, Socha worked extensively in regional and Off-Broadway theater. In September 2010, she appeared at the Yale Repertory Theater in We Have Always Lived in the Castle, a new musical based on the Shirley Jackson novel. In April 2011, she opened in The Dream of the Burning Boy at the Roundabout Theatre Company's Black Box Theater, and that July she played Daisy Fenton in Death Takes a Holiday at the Laura Pels Theater. In November 2011, she made her solo concert debut at Duplex Cabaret Theatre in New York City with a show titled Home.
Socha originated the role of Medium Alison in a workshop of the musical Fun Home at The Public Theater in October 2012, and she reprised the role in the official Off-Broadway premiere of the show, which ran from September 30 through December 1, 2013, also at The Public Theater. She departed the production for personal reasons and was replaced by her understudy, Emily Skeggs, who continued with the run and later transferred the show to Broadway.
In the summer of 2017, Socha originated the role of Amber in the world premiere of Anna Ziegler's play Actually at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She continued with the production when it transferred Off-Broadway to Manhattan Theatre Club's Stage II at New York City Center.
Socha returned to Broadway in 2018 after an eight-year absence, originating the role of Philoclea in Head Over Heels, a musical built around the music of The Go-Go's and based on Sir Philip Sidney's The Arcadia. The production reunited her with Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer and castmate Andrew Durand. The show had its world premiere at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco from April 10 through May 6, 2018, before arriving at the Hudson Theatre on Broadway, where previews began June 23 and opening night was July 26, 2018. Socha remained with the production for its entire Broadway run, which closed on January 6, 2019.
On March 5, 2024, Socha joined the Broadway cast of Wicked, replacing McKenzie Kurtz in the role of Glinda. She performed the role opposite Mary Kate Morrissey as Elphaba and departed the cast in March 2025.
On television, Socha portrayed Mia in the Showtime series The Big C and held a recurring role in the FX series Damages. She made single appearances on White Collar, A Gifted Man, Made in Jersey, and Law and Order: SVU, and was a regular cast member in Seasons 1 and 2 of the Amazon comedy series Red Oaks.
In her personal life, Socha met actor Etai Benson in 2011, and the two married in 2020. They appeared together as Tzeitel and Motel in Paper Mill Playhouse's production of Fiddler on the Roof. The couple welcomed a son in 2023. In April 2023, Socha announced on Instagram that she had converted to Judaism.
