About
Alexander Smalls, born February 7, 1952, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is an African-American chef, restaurateur, and former opera singer. He was raised in a Gullah Geechee family and graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1970. He went on to study opera at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1974, and also received training at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, having previously attended Wofford College.
Smalls performed on Broadway from 1976 to 1983, with his credits including Porgy and Bess. His work on the cast recording of that production earned him both a Grammy Award and a Tony Award.
Following his performing career, Smalls established himself in the New York City restaurant industry, opening several Southern and low country dining establishments, among them Café Beulah, Sweet Ophelia's, and The Cecil. Esquire named The Cecil the best new restaurant in America in 2013. Smalls has also authored cookbooks, including Between Harlem and Heaven, co-written with JJ Johnson and published in 2018, which received a James Beard Award.
