About
Alexander Lockwood (May 5, 1902 – January 25, 1990) was an American actor born in Slezská Ostrava, in what is now the Czech Republic. Originally from Poland, he built a career spanning stage, film, and television that extended from the late 1930s through the early 1980s.
Lockwood's film work began in 1938, and during the 1940s he appeared in pictures including Just Off Broadway, Sherlock Holmes in Washington, and Jigsaw. His screen career continued into the 1950s with roles in The Wrong Man and The Invisible Boy, the latter alongside Richard Eyer, as well as The Story of Mankind, Monster on the Campus, and The Tarnished Angels. He appeared in Edge of Eternity with Cornel Wilde and Cary Grant during the same period. The 1960s brought further film credits, among them Beauty and the Beast with Joyce Taylor, Walk on the Wild Side with Laurence Harvey, and The Monkey's Uncle with Tommy Kirk. In the 1970s Lockwood appeared in Duel, Family Plot, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. His final film role came in Romantic Comedy in 1983.
Alongside his screen work, Lockwood maintained a Broadway presence between 1938 and 1951. His stage credits included a production of Hamlet, as well as Soliloquy, The Biggest Thief in Town, and Remains to Be Seen. Lockwood died on January 25, 1990, at the age of 87.
