Alex Moffat

Alex Moffat is an American actor and comedian born on March 25, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from North Shore Country Day School in 2000 and went on to attend Denison University, where he earned his degree in 2004.

Moffat began his professional career in Chicago's comedy scene, performing as an improviser and featured performer at venues and companies including The Second City, ImprovOlympic, Annoyance Theatre, and Zanies Comedy Club. In 2015, he co-starred alongside John Ashton in the indie drama Uncle John. The following year, he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live on NBC, making his on-air debut during the October 1, 2016 season 42 episode, which also marked the debuts of Mikey Day and Melissa Villaseñor. Moffat had auditioned for the show during each of the three preceding seasons before ultimately being hired following a showcase at iO Theater in Chicago. His screen test featured impressions of Chris Hemsworth and Joe Biden.

Moffat was elevated to repertory cast member status in 2018 at the start of season 44. Among his recurring characters on the program was The Guy Who Just Bought a Boat, a preppy figure who dispenses dating advice, and Terry Fink, a film critic who delivers comedic reviews during the Weekend Update segment. On the December 19, 2020 episode, he appeared in the cold open portraying President-elect Joe Biden, assuming the role from Jim Carrey. He departed Saturday Night Live at the conclusion of season 47 in 2022, after six years with the show. He subsequently made cameo appearances in the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special in February 2025 and reprised his portrayal of Eric Trump in the pre-taped sketch "The White Potus" in April 2025.

In 2023, Moffat made his Broadway debut in The Cottage. He resides in Brooklyn with his wife, Caroline Rau. The couple's daughter, Everett, was born in January 2021.
