About

Aldo Fabrizi was a Roman-born actor, director, screenwriter, and comedian whose career spanned stage, screen, and international touring productions. Born into a humble family in Rome, Italy, he made his stage debut in a suburban theater in 1931, building an early reputation through comical sketches and macchiette — monologues caricaturing stock characters — that earned him recognition as a star of the Roman revue and avanspettacolo circuits.

Fabrizi entered film during the war years, making his screen debut in 1942 and quickly establishing himself across both comedic and dramatic genres. His most celebrated screen role came in 1945, when he portrayed Don Pietro, a heroic priest, in Roberto Rossellini's neorealist landmark Rome, Open City. The film's critical and commercial success led to further leading roles in neorealist productions. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he was frequently paired on screen with comedian Totò and with Peppino De Filippo in a series of popular comedies.

Alongside his acting work, Fabrizi was active as a screenwriter from early in his career and made his directorial debut in 1948 with the drama Immigrants, a project on which he also served as writer. He went on to direct, produce, and write a number of additional films through the mid-1950s, including The Passaguai Family, The Passaguai Family Gets Rich, and They Stole a Tram.

His stage work brought him to Broadway in 1964, when he appeared in the musical comedy Rugantino. That production was part of a broader international tour that took him across Europe and Latin America as well.

Over the course of his career, Fabrizi received two Nastro d'Argento Awards — one for best actor for his performance in Alessandro Blasetti's Father's Dilemma, and one for best supporting actor in Ettore Scola's We All Loved Each Other So Much. He was recognized at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival for best screenplay for Cops and Robbers, and received a special David di Donatello Award for career achievement in 1988. Following his death on April 2, 1990, Poste italiane issued a commemorative stamp in his honor.

Fabrizi was married to singer Beatrice Rocchi, known professionally as Reginella, until her death in 1981. His sister, Elena Fabrizi, was also an actress.
