About
Albert Gran was a Norwegian-born American stage and film actor, born on August 4, 1862, in Bergen, Norway. He was the son of Albert Nicolai Gran (1838–1915) and Auguste Schwarting (1844–1910). Gran emigrated to the United States in 1914 and went on to build a career across both the Broadway stage and the Hollywood screen. He died on December 16, 1932, in Los Angeles, California, as the result of an automobile accident, at the age of 70.
Gran's Broadway career spanned nearly three decades, from 1896 to 1925. His stage credits included the plays Canary Dutch, Tarnish, The Comedian, and The Trial of Joan of Arc, as well as the musical Manhattan Mary. His work on stage encompassed both drama and light comedy, genres that would also define his later screen presence.
Gran launched his film career in 1916 and appeared as a character actor in 44 films between that year and 1933. Among his notable screen appearances, he played Duke Travina opposite Marion Davies in Beverly of Graustark (1926), Paul Boul alongside Janet Gaynor in Seventh Heaven (1927), and B. Bickering Brown with Joan Crawford in Our Modern Maidens (1929). His additional film credits included Civilian Clothes (1920), Four Sons (1928), Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929), and Mother Knows Best (1928), which was Fox's first full talkie. Gran died before the completion and release of his final film, Employees' Entrance (1932).
