About
Alan Paul Wichinsky, born November 23, 1949, in Newark, New Jersey, is an American singer, composer, and Grammy Award-winning member of the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer, of which he is a founding member of the group's current incarnation.
Paul was raised in Newark and Hillside, New Jersey, and graduated from Hillside High School. He went on to attend Newark State College, now known as Kean University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. He later received two honorary doctorate degrees: one in the Humanities from Kean University and one in Music from Berklee School of Music.
His professional career began on Broadway at age 12, when he appeared in the original cast of Oliver!, a credit that falls within his Broadway tenure spanning 1963 to 1972. Following his college education, Paul returned to Broadway in the original cast of Grease, where he played Teen Angel and Johnny Casino. In those roles, he introduced the songs "Beauty School Dropout" and "Born to Hand Jive."
As a writer and arranger for The Manhattan Transfer, Paul earned four Grammy nominations, including nominations for his compositions "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone" and "Code of Ethics," as well as for his vocal arrangements on "Ray's Rockhouse." He also received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocalist, Male. In 2004, he released a solo album titled Another Place in Time. He additionally provided the singing voice of the animated character Dino Spumoni on the television series Hey Arnold!
Paul has been married to writer and model Angela Paul for 42 years, and the couple has one daughter.
