Alan Cox is a British actor born on 6 August 1970 in Westminster, London. He is the son of Scottish Emmy Award-winning actor Brian Cox and his second wife, actress Caroline Burt. Cox was educated at St Paul's School in London and has a sister, Margaret, and two half-brothers, Orson and Torin.

Cox began his screen career at a young age, appearing in the 1982 television adaptation of John Mortimer's play A Voyage Round My Father, in which he portrayed the young Mortimer alongside Laurence Olivier. He gained wider recognition in 1985 when he was cast as a teenage Dr. Watson in the film Young Sherlock Holmes. Additional film credits include An Awfully Big Adventure (1995), Mrs. Dalloway (1997), and The Auteur Theory (1999). In 2011, he appeared in the independent comedy Act Naturally, playing a nudist named Cory Beck.

Cox brought his career to Broadway during the 2007–2008 season, appearing in two productions. He performed in Translations and Frost/Nixon, both of which marked his presence on the New York stage during that period.
