About
Al Lee, born Albert Lee Cunningham on October 25, 1891, in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American actor, producer, and manager whose career spanned vaudeville, silent films, and Broadway. The son of Georgia Lee and Albert Deering Cunningham, he built a professional life that moved between performance and behind-the-scenes management across several decades of American entertainment.
Early in his career, Lee worked in vaudeville, including a double act with Eddie Cantor. It was during this period that he met actress Lilyan Tashman, whom he married in 1914. The couple divorced in 1921. In 1933, Lee married Elizabeth Hopkins, the 25-year-old daughter of Angus Hopkins, described as a prominent New York family.
Lee's Broadway performing credits include the 1933 musical Murder at the Vanities. That same year, he served as General Manager for George White's Music Hall Varieties, a role he had also held for the production's 1932 edition, which ran from November 22 to December 31, 1932. Over the course of his career, Lee served as manager for George White's Scandals for twelve years.
Later in his career, Lee transitioned into company management for dramatic productions, serving as Company Manager for the Broadway run of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie from March 31, 1945, through August 3, 1946. Lee died on November 8, 1945, at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan following a brief illness, at the age of 54.
